12 Tips for Crushing Your Birkie Trail Run

Posted on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 by Jan Guenther
Caught your attention? Ok, for some maybe it's not about “crushing” it. Let's try “Tips for Finishing Your Birkie Trail Run in Fine Form!" To me, the definition of crushing means winning an age group, winning overall, or creating a personal best. BUT, finishing with a smile, without leg cramps or bloody knees, and doing as well or better than you expected is my definition of ##...

Jan Talks Motivation

Posted on Thursday, May 11, 2017 by Jan Guenther
Jan Guenther's thoughts on
KEEPING MOTIVATED & FIT FOR NEXT YEARS BIRKIE from the perspective of a 50-something woman athlete with tender knees.
What to do? How do I train for next year’s skiing when most of THIS PAST winter did not happen?
And of course, I add to my mish-mash of thoughts concerning every emotion that surrounds training, “Why even bother trying to improve skill or fitness leve...

Ironman AGAIN at age 57: Entry #1

Posted on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 by Jan Guenther

Tuesday 10th of May.

I am four weeks and 10 days into sticking to a training program. Yes I paid a coach to motivate me. My type of motivation is simple-just a plan sent to me. Nothing else. I have the knowledge to train myself but I won’t listen to me. And I will argue internally and it won’t be fun. Having a coach is a treat.

I should look at the entire IM experience as a treat because it certainly is pricy. Even with using my 19 yr old Merlin tri bike, the co...

Dressing for the Cold

Posted on Thursday, January 14, 2016 by Jan Guenther

Suggestions on dressing for cold weather racing and touring!

Cold weather is always a shock to the system when the weather has been drizzly all December. Even after ski racing for 31 years I have to take extra time to make sure I pack everything I need for a cold weather event.

Racing of course, requires a lighter layering of clothing because our goal is to dress JUST RIGHT for our effort put forth. Who has time to unzip a jacket the middle of a race?!! When ski touring, consider these su...

Finding the glass half full

Posted on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 by Jan Guenther

Time to jot down some more thoughts that hit me during my first month of living as a 56 years old and accepting the fact that my soon-to-be senior in high school son enrolled into the ‘delayed entry program” to be in the navy or navy seal. The dimensions of my life are changing; children moving on, mobile retailing, and neck wrinkles.

(Photo - running leg of the 2015 Tri-Loppet. Lately, I haven't had as much time to train and race as I would like.)##...

What to do for exercise when it rains

Posted on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 by Jan Guenther

Yes, I am nibbling on these wonderfully light chocolate covered things.  I used to gobble up these treats, sitting on my desk in an upright bag with a large hand-sized opening (why they are here in my office in the first place is another problem altogether) BUT, I have been restricting my sugar lately, so I am delicately savoring them before stuffing the bag back into my business filing cabinet.

I did CrossFit this morning, so I must NOT eat up the calories I burned. I made myself hit the gym. I did not feel like running, I did not feel like biking. Caitlin and Brian Gregg (local Olympic XC skiers) and Matt Leibsch (Gear West employee and Birkie Champ) were meeting at Gear West to roller ski in the rain. I hid in my car as to not see them ☺ At age 56, I have roller skied and biked in the rain enough to feel I earned the right n...

A Finland XC Ski Experience

Posted on Thursday, March 26, 2015 by Jan Guenther

A few weeks I participated in one of the most unique skiing events in my life. The Swedish Rajalta Rajalle-Hiihto Border To Border event, though not a race, offers a lot of skiing in a very fun way. “From Border to Border is a 440 km long guided ski tour from Russian border to Swedish border, which follows a route near the Arctic Circle. In total there are 7 days of skiing and daytrip distances vary between 44 and 78 km. Skied in the classical cross-county style, the event is very...

Salomon Carbon Skate Lab

Posted on Friday, February 27, 2015 by Jan Guenther

My 28th birke year and I feel I am always learning a little something new about skiing, technique, and skis. This winter at an industry trade show, I was handed a pair of Salomon’s super light, stealth black new Carbon skate skis to try. I excitedly flew them back and since it was only two days before the City of the Lakes Loppet, I handed the skis to Matt Fox to get the bases ready in 24 hours. So without any history with the ski I raced them on the lovely man-made Theodore Wi...
